    Arrival to Porto

    Stage 1: Porto (Matosinhos) - Vila do Conde (20 km / 12.4 miles)

    Transfer: Porto – Matosinhos *
    Start your Way in Matosinhos and follow the coastline on wooden boardwalks and pavements where you’ll encounter a series of wide sandy beaches, nature reserves and local fishermen at work before reaching the historical seaside town of Vila do Conde.

    Stage 2: Vila do Conde - Esposende (24,5 km / 15.1 miles)

    Cut through the urban areas between Vila do Conde and the coastal resort town of Povoa de Varzim. Then walk beside the coast and across beaches before heading inland through market gardens, woodland and villages. Admire the views as you cross the River Cávado to enter Esposende.

    Stage 3: Esposende - Viana do Castelo (23.5 km / 14.5 miles)

    Today offers a series of villages interspersed with delightful patches of forest and rivers with views of distant mountain ranges. The Eiffel bridge over the River Lima offers spectacular views along the valley and estuary and the attractive historical and contemporary architecture of Viana do Castelo.

    Stage 4: Viana do Castelo - V. P. Ancora (19 km / 11.7 miles)

    Most of the day is spent inland through a string of villages with occasional coastal views and rivers. There’s a steady climb up one mostly forested hill before the descent to the seaside town of Vila Praia de Âncora.

    Stage 5: V.P. Ancora - Caminha (9.5 km / 5 miles)

    Follow the coastal path between Âncora and Moled0 and then continue to the pretty town of Caminha via a possible detour through the pine forest that borders the beach.

    Stage 6: Caminha - Oia (17 km / 10 miles)

    If there’s time, take a detour through the pine forest beside the beach before catching the ferry across the River Minho to the peaceful fishing town of A Guarda in Spain, a great place to tuck into fresh seafood. Follow the Camino through the town center and out towards the rugged coastline. Use coastal paths, forest tracks and tarmac roads to reach the small beachfront village of Oia, dominated by its 12th century monastery.

    Stage 7: Oia - Baiona (17.5 km / 10.9 miles)

    Start the day with a rural coastal landscape of small fields, scattered houses and a few villages then cut across the mountains towards Baiona. This rugged uphill section offers a welcome change of scenery and terrain before the final descent into the pretty resort town of Baiona.

    Stage 8: Baiona - Vigo (25.5 km / 15.8 miles)

    The residential outskirts of Baiona gradually lead to more rural terrain and scattered villages interspersed with patches of woodland. A stint on a busy road ends with another series of villages before you reach Vigo where you’ll cut through Castrelos Park to skirt around the edge of the city.

    Stage 9: Vigo - Arcade (22 km / 13.5 miles)

    Leave Vigo via its main shopping street and follow one long road through a string of quiet hillside villages. After several kilometres you’ll swap houses for trees and views of floating mussel farms and the Cíes islands before the descent into the town of Redondela. Walk uphill through a forest then down to the riverside town of Arcade, renowned for its oysters.

    Stage 10: Arcade - Pontevedra (13 km / 8 miles)

    Ancient stone paths lead up through the woods and a scenic detour takes you along the River Tomeza. Pontevedra’s historical city centre is a maze of atmospheric squares filled with tapas bars.

    Stage 11: Pontevedra - Caldas de Reis (22 km / 13.6 miles)

    Although fairly long, the journey to Caldas to Reis is not difficult and is mostly through pleasant countryside including an attractive section of woodland. Soothe your feet in one of Caldas de Reis’ thermal springs when you arrive.

    Stage 12: Caldas de Reis - Padron (19 km / 11.5 miles)

    The day begins with gentle climb through a series of hamlets and the charming woodlands of Valga. You’ll see several attractive churches and stone crosses on the way to Padrón, where St. James is originally said to have been buried.

    Stage 13: Padron - Santiago (24 km / 14.8 miles)

    The final leg of your Camino is mostly through rural settings with a reasonable amount of shade. The last few kilometres are tiring but as the sign near the River Sar says, “Don’t Stop Now!” Enter the medieval centre of Santiago to make your way to the magnificent cathedral and end your journey.
